Sun exposure & sunshine hours for any address in Switzerland

You'll see this place once – probably on a bright afternoon, at its best. This report shows what it's like the other 364 days a year: sunlight and shadow through every season, traffic noise around the clock, and the connections that shape daily life there.

Danke vielmals für diesen wunderbaren Service - Wir wüssten nicht was tun, wenn es Suntag nicht gäbe um Verschattungen aus der Topografie zu berechnen.

Frequently Asked Questions

The report
What exactly is a Suntag report?
A 16-page PDF analysis of a single location in Switzerland or Liechtenstein, ready in under ten seconds. At its core is a sun-exposure and shading study – how much sun the spot gets through the year, and how the surrounding terrain cuts into that by season. Around it sit the layers that shape everyday life there: road and rail noise, public-transport access, mobile and broadband coverage, and long-term climate averages.
What is sun exposure, and why does it matter?
Sun exposure is how much direct sunlight a location actually receives over the year – governed by the season, the sun's path, and the hills, ridges or mountains that sit on its horizon. It drives daylight, heating and cooling costs, and how much use you'll really get out of a south-facing balcony. Suntag calculates it for any Swiss address, day by day across the whole year, from the real terrain model published by swisstopo – not just the astronomical sun position simpler calculators use.
How many hours of sunshine does a house need?
For good living comfort, a location should get several hours of direct sun even in winter; pure north-facing or heavily shaded valley locations score markedly worse. The Suntag report shows the effective sun exposure of your location month by month, including the critical winter months from November to February, when surrounding mountains and hills block the sun the longest.
How is it calculated?
From a digital terrain model of Switzerland – a 25-metre elevation grid published by swisstopo – combined with the sun's exact path through the sky across the whole year. For your point, Suntag traces the horizon in every direction, works out the moment the sun clears each surrounding hill and mountain, and adds up the sunlit time that results.
What does the report not take into account?
Trees and vegetation, buildings and other structures, and any construction – existing, planned or built after the report is generated. The terrain model deliberately excludes trees and buildings, so the analysis reflects the shape of the land itself, not what's built or growing on it. Weather and air quality aren't modelled either. All figures are estimates and can differ from what you experience on site.
How accurate is it?
The terrain data and the sun-path calculation are exact. How closely the report matches what you'll actually see depends on what forms the horizon at your location: where it's hills and mountains, the report captures it well; where it's a neighbouring building or a row of trees, it can't – those aren't in the terrain model. Open, rural locations track reality more closely than dense urban ones.
Can I use it to decide whether to buy, rent or build somewhere?
It's a useful input, not a verdict. The report is general information – not a survey, an expert opinion, or architectural, legal or financial advice – and shouldn't be the sole basis for a decision. Use it to compare locations side by side, catch an obvious problem early, or walk into a viewing with the right questions already in hand.
Can I use it to plan solar panels?
Yes. Alongside showing how sunny a spot is, Suntag maps the exact horizon around it – precisely the shading input a solar-yield calculator needs to estimate what a panel installation at that location would actually produce.
Coverage and data
Which areas are covered?
Any address or coordinate in Switzerland and Liechtenstein. Locations outside that area can't be analysed.
How is the location defined?
You pick a single point – by address, place name, or a click on the map. The analysis runs for a position 2 metres above the ground at that point; it doesn't model the height of a specific floor or balcony.
Where does the data come from?
Official Swiss federal sources: swisstopo (terrain, place names), the Federal Office for the Environment (noise), the Federal Office of Communications (broadband and mobile coverage), MeteoSwiss (climate norms, 1991–2020), and the Federal Office for Spatial Development (public transport). Address search runs on OpenStreetMap.
How current is the data?
Each report uses the newest version of every dataset Suntag has access to at the moment you order.
Ordering, payment and delivery
How much does it cost?
CHF 12 for the Standard report, CHF 22 for the Premium report. One-off payment, no subscription.
How do I pay?
Online and in advance through our payment provider, Stripe – by card, TWINT, Apple Pay or Google Pay. Suntag never sees or stores your payment details.
When do I get the report?
Straight away. Generation takes under 10 seconds; the report is then offered as a download and also emailed to you.
Do I get a receipt?
Yes – Stripe issues a payment receipt automatically. suntag.ch klg is not registered for Swiss VAT, so no VAT is charged.
How long do you keep my finished report?
The report files are available for 7 days, then automatically deleted. Save your copy when you receive it – you can re-download within that window.
Standard vs Premium
What is the difference between the Standard and Premium report?
The analysis is the same. The Premium report (CHF 22) additionally contains a high-definition version of every chart, laid out in landscape format, with no Suntag logo – a white-label document. It comes with a licence that lets you reproduce it, put it under your own name and branding, and give it to your own clients.
I am an architect, real-estate agent or consultant. Which one do I need?
The Premium report. Its licence explicitly permits you to incorporate the report – its charts and data – into your own documents, presentations, listings and client deliverables. The Standard licence only lets you use the report for your own purposes and share it unchanged with the parties to your own transaction.
Can I resell Suntag reports?
You cannot resell or redistribute a report as a standalone product, or use report data to build a competing service. With the Premium licence you can sell your own work – an expertise, a listing, a valuation – that has a Suntag report built into it.
Do you offer an API or volume pricing?
No. Each report is ordered and paid for individually.
Refunds and support
Can I get a refund?
Because the report is delivered digitally and immediately, purchases are non-refundable and any statutory withdrawal right ends once the download starts. The exception: if a report cannot be delivered for a technical reason on our side, or is materially defective and cannot be corrected, we will re-run it or refund the price.
The report has a problem, or the location is wrong. What do I do?
Contact us through the form on the site with your order details and we will look into it – a re-run or a correction where the fault is ours.
How do I get in touch?
Through the contact form on the website. We answer everyone.
